Silent Raids: Obama solves half a problem, creates many others

Posted on March 6, 2011

Obama’s latest approach to immigration enforcement – silent raid audits – is having considerable success in locating illegal aliens in America.

It all sounds great: “ICE raid nabs [X-number] of illegals” and “[X-number] undocumented workers fired.” But the plan has serious deficiencies in practice.

Throughout the last year, auditors from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement department examined forms known as I-9s, which all new hires in the country must fill out. ICE then advised companies of Social Security and immigration numbers that did not check out with federal databases. The audits force businesses to fire every suspected illegal immigrant on the payroll, not just those on duty at the time of a raid. The audits also make it much harder to hire other unauthorized workers as replacements.

So far, ICE conducted audits of more than 2,970 companies, resulting in nearly $7 million in civil fines and thousands of  workers found to be illegal have been fired, and detained by ICE.

And then, those illegals are … released.

While cracking down on employers who hire illegals, the immigration agency has won’t bring any criminal charges against immigrant workers who lack legal status, but have otherwise clean records. You can STAY in America illegally. You just can’t WORK here.

More than 60 percent of farm workers in the United States are illegal immigrants, federal labor officials estimate.

Gebbers Farm, an orchard in Washington, was audited and 500 of its workers, mostly immigrants from Mexico were found to be in the country illegally. These firings shocked the little village of 2100 in eastern Washington, with many residents claiming they “had no idea” that 25 percent of their neighbors were not American citizens. Many of the illegals simply bought new illegal documents – which are ridiculously easy to obtain – and went right back to work. Illegals use stolen-but-valid Social Security Numbers. E-Verify can’t differentiate between an illegal using a stolen SSN, and a legitimate employee, unless illegals use their names in conjunction with the stolen SSN, which they have been instructed by the coyote who brought them across the border to NEVER do. Of course, it doesn’t help having an absurd law which absolves them of the crime of SSN ID theft if they claim they only “borrowed” the SSN to work, and didn’t “knowingly” steal an identity.

What’s the difference between these “silent raids” and if the DEA raids a drug dealer’s stash house, but doesn’t confiscate the drugs or arrest the dealers? Does it really do anyone any good to have a police spokesman or politician stand there and say, “Yup, we’ve identified the criminals, but we’re not going to arrest them or do anything to get them off our streets.”

Gebbers Farms applied to the federal Guest Workers Program and hired 1,200 workers, most from Mexico who are allowed stay in the US for up to six months without citizenship or any further documentation, and no follow-up at the six-month point to verify the workers’ status at that time. Only another raid prompts any action.

So instead of communities being populated by illegal aliens working at menial jobs, we have communities being populated by “legal” aliens working menial jobs *AND* illegal aliens who have no job, a lot of resentful anger … and a lot of time on their hands.

So what’s being accomplished other than catchy banner headlines, great video footage of illegals being walked out in handcuffs, and the padding of a $300 Billion federal department budget?  If the government is going through all the effort of FINDING illegal aliens, WHY NOT DEPORT THEM?  Every politician in America has looked into a TV camera and said that the reason they can’t “just go deport illegals” is because it’s so difficult to find them. So why not deport them now that you’ve found them? Why? Because it’s “mean”? Because it’s “not fair to the illegals and their families”? Because it might tarnish the “white knight” image that so many in Washington DC are deluded enough to think still exists, or matters?

What is the sense in filling America’s agricultural and manufacturing communities with millions of pissed off Mexicans?

I want to revisit this issue in a few months to see what the robbery, home invasion, and street crime statistics are in those communities where illegals were forced out of their workplace and then just cut loose and told to fend for themselves.

But hey, at least we’ll get to watch the video footage of organized illegal alien protests all over the country as people who aren’t citizens of the United States wave their country’s flag and demand their “rights.”
